amaroK MP3 support in Ubuntu Dapper

I was a bit frustrated that amaroK doesn’t come with MP3 support straight ‘out of the box’, but I guess that’s what patents and restrictions end up doing. Oh well, it isn’t too difficult to add MP3 support, so I won’t complain about it anymore.

One problem I did have though is with the lack of error message it gives when you try to open MP3s before they are supported.  It made me think there was something wrong with the files that I had copied over from Windows.  Just a simple error message stating that it was an unsupported format would be nice, rather than just skipping through every MP3 file until a ‘Playlist finished’ message appeared.  Maybe its time to search amaroK’s bugs/feature requests and let someone know…
OK, so you want amaroK with MP3 support?  Firstly, if you don’t have amaroK, you should install it using the ‘Add/Remove’ function under ‘Applications’. And then all you have to do is intall a few extra plugins and codecs using the terminal, by inputting:

sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly libxine-extracodecs

And that’s it, your MP3s are useful again!

Also, it seems to handle Chinese characters well, but I can’t get it to fetch lyrics for Chinese songs just yet. Something to do before next Karaoke night…

  8. Hi there, if you wish to use Amarok with MP3-support on Ubuntu Dapper Drake, simply install Amarok and use Terminal Command Line:
    $ sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly libxine-extracodecs
    Or alternatively manually download the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly libxine-extracodecs and manually install.

  9. Thanks pal. Work’s fine!

  10. [...] It took a while to dawn on me that perhaps it just couldn’t play mp3 files, because everything else on my machine can. Eventually I twigged and a quick google found that I’m not the first person to have this problem. Sure enough the fix presented on that page worked (after logging out and in again), but a useful error message from Amarok would have got me there a lot faster. [...]

  11. This didn’t work for me at first since I didn’t have the appropriate repository added to my apt-get sources list (/etc/apt/sources.list):

    deb http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper multiverse

    after adding this to the file and doing an update (sudo apt-get update) everything works swell. Thanks for the tip.

  12. Very nicely done, short and to the point.

    Grover – Thanks for the sources tip, saved me some googling.

  13. Thanks mate, great help.

  14. Just in the nick of time. Thanks for the tip! Very useful indeed ^_^

  15. Me too. Thanks.

  16. cool dude its really hver helpfull……
    but for Dapper add the link to apt source list:
    deb http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper multiverse
    then update apt-get
    and finally get the plugins:
    $ sudo apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly libxine-extracodecs

  17. thank u very much….i have been doing a lot of things to get this done.when i start amarok it used to say that it can’t play mp3 files and asked me if i wanted to get mp3 support.even though i said yes, it never worked….once again thanks a lot

  23. It’s giving me this error :(

  31. This didn’t work for me. Upgrading amarok-xine and all of its depdencies did, however.

  32. none of it has worked for me

  33. working for me now

    i tried installing an older version of Amarok and that apparently made it corrupt
    then i had to doa full removal and a full reinstall/upgrade
    after that started Amarok again
    this time it not only prompted for the mp3 support but also downloaded and installed it

    now it’s all working :)

  34. #add the link in following line to apt source list (using for example, sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list) :
    deb http://nl.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper multiverse

    #update apt-get
    $ sudo apt-get update

    #and finally get the plugins:
    #no need of gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly in my case
    $ sudo apt-get install libxine-extracodecs

    It works!
